L’osteomalacia è un’osteopatia demineralizzante di natura metabolica caratterizzata dalla presenza di tessuto osteoide non calcificato in misura superiore alla norma. L’osteomalacia si realizza tipicamente nel soggetto adulto ed è espressione di un’alterazione dei meccanismi di mineralizzazione. Quando il difetto di calcificazione insorge nello scheletro in accrescimento, si usa il termine di rachitismo. Il difetto di mineralizzazione del rachitismo interessa, oltre che la matrice osteoide dell’osso, anche la matrice cartilaginea delle cartilagini di accrescimento, prima che si realizzi la loro fusione.
